Scarborough Pet Care and Our Community

Scarborough: History and Geography

When Elizabeth Simcoe, wife of the first lieutenant governor of Upper Canada, saw the bluffs along the shore of Lake Ontario in Scarborough, she was reminded of the limestone cliffs found across the pond in Scarborough, England.

Then named Scarborough, North Yorkshire, the area had also once been named after somewhere else – the Scottish city of Glasgow. Its unique heritage has even earned it a contentious trans-continental nickname: Scarberia. The name is a blend of Scarborough and Siberia because of how far-off it seems to sit from downtown Toronto.

Scarborough, ONT is a district within the eastern part of the city of Toronto. It is one of the most multicultural and diverse areas in the Greater Toronto area because it is home to a high number of new Canadian immigrants. In a 2006 census, 57% of its residents were born in another country.
